That was probably part of the problem, I know that with PayPal too. Normally you could simply deposit with it and the amounts were usually deducted from the account if there was no credit. If there was nothing on it, it was only noticed days later or, as you described, funds were taken back... it's clear that no one will be able to do this in the long term.
