why suddenly be against it now?

Because people don't want to be constrained anymore. Then there is the fact that many people feel that their freedoms and basic rights have been robbed. I can't answer why there was a change (way of thinking) over the generations.

Perhaps these people were misled or even influenced by reports (also partly false information) to think like this. After all, everyone was tied up at home for months and the telly was on from morning to night.

Everyone has to decide for themselves what to do. It is also difficult to convince your opponents once they have made up their minds or are convinced of a certain thing. This is just wasted effort. Their mindset would only change if they contracted it themselves, and that too severely. I don't wish that on anyone, but these people just have to live with this risk.
