As the "Sddeutsche Zeitung" reported on Wednesday, the EU Commission is putting the German legislation on the regulation of gambling to the test.
BERLIN (dpa-AFX) - Brussels has opened pilot proceedings against Germany and is criticizing the applicable gambling laws on several levels. In a letter to the federal government and the federal states responsible for regulating the industry, the Commission questions the rules for online casino and poker games, the organization of sports betting and the entire construct of regulation.
The goal formulated in the law, to steer the population's urge to gamble into "orderly and monitored channels", has failed, write the representatives of the Internal Market Commissioner Elzbieta Bienkowska. The protection of minors is also inadequate, both on the Internet and in slot machines in amusement arcades and restaurants. "Against the background of the statements made in this letter, there are considerable doubts as to whether the goals of the State Treaty on Gambling will be achieved," writes the Brussels authority. She also questions the state sports betting monopoly.
