For decades abroad, we Germans were described as humorless fun brakes. Our sense of humor and especially the rough one is very well developed. Who else but us would put films like "He's Back Again" first on the bestseller lists and then in the cinemas?
Imagine Las Vegas in Flensburg. Well, the German guests would certainly be just as excited as everyone else, but actually that's not our world. We like it a little quieter and more contemplative from time to time, at least the old players who have been bending their backs at the roulette wheel for 20 years, which often but not often enough does what one hopes for.
If Bugsy Siegel could see what has become of his Las Vegas today, I don't know if he would cry, laugh or pull his gun.
What happens in Vegas stays in Vegas. Behind the glare, the never-ending game, and the wisecracks at the beginning of this sentence lie countless destinies. People who made it to Vegas but then lost everything and today vegetate in the side streets, mostly pumped full of petrol or lawn fertilizer crack.
Many film pearls from the gamer milieu adorn the video shelves. I can only recommend everyone to watch the movie "Owning Mahowny". Based on true events and starring the late Oscar winner Philip Seymour Hoffman, this Canadian flick isn't a popcorn blockbuster, but it is an intense and true drama about a master gamer who prefers ribs on the stairs to proffered ones Hookers of the casino renounced. A purist!
The film comes from time to time on German TV.
